Spotlight: Outerwear 2018
So far, we haven’t experienced those frigid temperatures that would have us debating hibernation. Unfortunately, we know that won’t last for long as the coldest months of the season are steadily approaching. Aside from a toque, gloves and some long johns, everyone needs a proper winter coat to help you survive until spring. If you’re one of the lucky few who have a lot of jackets but none for the oncoming Solstice, we’ve picked our 5 best go-to parkas and coats for the season. (Described in order of appearance)
Things to consider: When it comes to warmth, down and wool are your best friends. Whether it’s an 800 down filled GORE-TEX certified monster or a stealthily interlined wool beast, we didn’t hold back on what would keep you warmest. Other details that we factored into our top five included auxiliary pieces such as fur trims and mouthguards. Lastly length, the longer you go the warmer you’ll be - so thigh level weather defenders dominated our list.
The first of our very best marries the technological knowledge of Peak Performance with the vintage-inspired mindset of Nigel Cabourn. The Mount Down Parka is a unique take on the classic parka design we’ve seen throughout the years. With a 90/10 fill, this is the only Ventile shelled piece in stock and if you’ve dealt with this fabric before you know it does wonders in the worst conditions. Couple this fill and Ventile shell with the pile-lined pockets, chin strap, buttoned storm flap and double zipper and you’ve got the perfect parka.
Next up, The Real McCoy’s are all about recreating history right down to the last stitch and their take on the N-3B doesn’t skimp on anything. From the coyote lined hood with mutton lining to the storm cuffed detailing and flap, just you try to get some snow through this one. Packing a wool interlining common to most flight jackets, those of us grounded to the streets will be more than warm enough in one of these bad boys.
As much as we love a good chore coat, when the weather takes a turn for the worst we’re happy the Solphex exists. Carhartt W.I.P.isn’t shy of the outdoors and their newest Solphex parka proves it. Bulky, heavy and warm as can be, this poly-filled behemoth can do everything down can - even when wet! And, with our damp city, a bit of water repellency goes a long way. Add the chest pockets, patch pockets and that handy funnel hood and you can see why this parka cracked our top five.
For the lucky few who already own one of these beauties, we know how happy you are when you step outside to brave the cold. The Rokkvi from Norse Projects is now in its 4th stage, appropriately named the Rokkvi 4.0, and comes in a variety of colourways. This year we’ve got the Storm System treated Loro Piana version, which adds additional warmth and class to one of our more refined brands in the shop. With its waterproof membrane, down insulation, taped seams, storm cuffs and a reworked fit, we’d be hard pressed to find an equal.
Rounding out our top picks is our special collaboration take on the Arpenteur Quart Long Jacket. Fully lined in a ‘fur’ like material for just the right amount of insulation. This is perfect for those who want an alternative to down. A transitional coat that can play multiple rolls in any setting and the most versatile coat on the list when weighing fashion versus function. The benefit of a jacket like this is the ability to layer a liner or thicker sweater underneath to stretch the lifespan of the Quart well into the deep freeze of the season. If a sudden breeze jolts the life back into you, the clasp secured collar can be flipped up for optimal neck protection. Voilà – perfection.
So, there you have it. Whether you’re looking for wool or down, rugged, refined or something in-between, our top five above’s got you fully protected from winter’s worst.
