Wool gabardine is a tightly woven twill with a steep, fine diagonal rib on the face. It’s dense, smooth, holds a crease well and sheds light rain, aka the fabric to defeat all fabrics when it comes to trousers. Both warp and weft is the real quality signal. Many cheaper gabardines use two-ply yarn only in the warp and a single yarn in the weft to save cost. Two-ply in both directions makes the fabric stronger, more balanced, more resistant to pilling and seam slippage, and better at recovering from wrinkles. Now that is some high quality fabric for a high quality pant, that will not be beat!
